VDI Sessions
BETA
VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) Sessions on CloudPe let you provision Windows virtual machines accessible via browser-based RDP — no local client installation required. Get a full Windows desktop environment in your browser within minutes.
🖥️ Browser-based RDP 🪟 Windows 2019/2022/2025 💰 Pay-as-you-go ⚡ Session auto-expiry
Prerequisites
What you need before creating a VDI Session
🌐 Web Browser
A modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox) is all you need — no RDP client required. Access is fully browser-based.
☁️ Active Project
A CloudPe project must be selected. VDI sessions are billed to the active project account.
💳 Billing Enabled
VDI sessions are billed hourly for active usage. Ensure your account has a valid payment method or sufficient credit.
📍 Region Availability
VDI Sessions are available in Mumbai DC2 Zone A (IN-WEST2) and Mumbai DC3 (IN-WEST3).
ℹ️ Beta Feature
VDI Sessions is currently a Beta feature on CloudPe. Some options may change as the feature evolves. Sessions auto-delete at expiry by default unless you enable “No Expiry”.
1
Navigate to VDI Sessions
Access VDI Sessions from the Compute sidebar

From the CloudPe dashboard, expand the Compute section in the left navigation sidebar and click VDI Sessions (marked with a BETA badge). You will see the VDI Sessions list page with two tabs: Sessions and Groups.

app.cloudpe.com/dashboard/vdi

🖥️ Sessions Tab
Lists all individual VDI sessions (active, shelved, expired). Shows session name, status, flavor, and region.
👥 Groups Tab
Lists VDI Groups — logical collections of sessions. Each group shows session count and supports Shelve / Unshelve / Extend / Delete actions.
ℹ️ Groups Management
VDI Groups allow you to batch-manage multiple sessions. You can Shelve (pause), Unshelve (resume), and Extend the expiry time of an entire group at once.
2
Start Creating a VDI Session
Open the Create VDI Session form

Click the + Create Session button in the top-right corner of the VDI Sessions page (or the “Create Session” button in the empty state). The Create VDI Session form opens as a single scrollable page.

Session Name & Region
Give your session a name and select the deployment region
1
Session Name
Enter a descriptive name for the session (e.g. Dev Workstation, Testing-Box-01). The placeholder shows “e.g. Dev Workstation”. This name appears in the sessions list.

Select OS Image
Choose the Windows version for your VDI session

CloudPe VDI supports multiple Windows versions. Select an OS image from the OS Images tab (default) or your own Custom Images if available.

1
OS Images Tab
Click an image card to select it. A purple checkmark appears on the selected image. Windows 2022 is selected by default.
2
Custom Images Tab
If you have previously created or uploaded custom Windows images to your CloudPe account, they will appear in the Custom Images tab for selection.
ℹ️ Minimum Storage
Each OS image has a minimum storage requirement. Windows 2022 requires at least 30 GB of storage. The storage field below will enforce this minimum automatically.
6
Configure Storage
Set the disk size for your VDI session
1
Storage (GB)
Enter the total disk size for the VDI session’s boot and data volume. The default is 80 GB. The minimum is determined by the selected OS image (30 GB for Windows 2022). The message shown: “Minimum 30 GB required by the selected image”.
💾 Storage Pricing Reference
Storage is billed at ₹0.6800/hr regardless of usage.
With the default 80 GB: ~₹0.68/hr storage cost.
Increase storage if you plan to install large applications, store large files, or process data locally.
💡 Storage Planning
Plan your storage upfront — resizing a VDI session’s disk after creation may require a session rebuild. For development workstations, 100–200 GB is recommended.
7
Set Session Expiry
Control how long your VDI session stays active

Session Expiry controls the lifetime of your VDI session. When a session reaches its expiry time, it is automatically deleted along with all its data.

app.cloudpe.com/dashboard/vdi/create
Session Expiry settings and Create Session button
Session Expiry settings and Create Session button
1
No Expiry (Manual deletion)
Check the “No expiry (session runs until manually deleted)” checkbox to keep the session running indefinitely. The session will only be terminated when you explicitly delete it from the sessions list.
2
Set Expiry Date & Time
Leave the checkbox unchecked to use a specific expiry date and time. The date/time picker shows the scheduled deletion time in UTC. The default is typically 24 hours from now. Example: “04/16/2026, 09:28 AM” — session will be automatically deleted at this UTC time.
⚠️ Data Loss Warning
All data inside a VDI session is lost when it expires or is deleted. Make sure to back up any important files to external storage (CloudPe Volumes, Object Storage, or download locally) before the session expires.
✅ Extend Expiry Later
You can extend the expiry time of an active session from the Sessions list using the Extend action, without creating a new session.
8
Review Pricing & Create Session
Confirm costs and provision your VDI session

The Price Estimate sidebar updates in real-time as you configure the session. Review the breakdown before clicking Create Session.

ℹ️ Hourly Billing
You are billed hourly only for active usage. When a session is Shelved (paused), compute costs stop but storage costs continue. Session auto-deletes at expiry to prevent runaway charges.
🖥️  Create Session
✅ Session Ready
After creation, your VDI session will appear in the Sessions list with an Active status. Click the session to open the browser-based RDP connection and access your Windows desktop.
Managing VDI Sessions
Actions available on active and existing sessions
💤 Shelve (Pause)
Saves the session state and stops the VM. Compute billing stops, but storage billing continues. Use for temporary pauses.
▶️ Unshelve (Resume)
Restores a shelved session and resumes the VM from its saved state. Compute billing resumes upon unshelving.
⏱️ Extend
Push the session expiry date further into the future without recreating the session. Your data and configuration are preserved.
🗑️ Delete
Permanently deletes the session and all its data. This action is irreversible. Back up all data before deleting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about VDI Sessions on CloudPe
Q: Do I need any software to access a VDI session?
A: No. CloudPe VDI Sessions are accessed entirely through your web browser using browser-based RDP. No RDP client, VPN, or additional software installation is required.
Q: What happens to my data when the session expires?
A: All data inside the session is permanently deleted when it expires or is manually deleted. Before expiry, back up important files to CloudPe Volumes, Object Storage, or download them locally.
Q: Can I pause a session and resume it later?
A: Yes. Use the Shelve action to pause a session (compute billing stops, storage continues). Use Unshelve to resume from the same state. This is ideal for overnight pauses.
Q: Can I change the flavor (CPU/RAM) after creation?
A: Flavor changes after creation are not directly supported. To change the compute size, you would need to create a new session with the desired flavor. Ensure you back up any data first.
Q: What are VDI Groups and when should I use them?
A: VDI Groups are logical collections of sessions that you can manage together. Use groups when you need to provision multiple identical sessions for a team, training batch, or lab environment — and want to Shelve/Unshelve/Extend them all simultaneously.
Q: Is VDI Management always free?
A: Yes. CloudPe charges ₹0.00/hr for VDI management overhead. You are only billed for compute (flavor) and storage resources.
Q: Can I use a custom Windows image?
A: Yes. If you have custom OS images in your CloudPe account, they will appear in the Custom Images tab during session creation. Standard Windows images (2019, 2022, 2025) are provided by CloudPe.
